Before the Concert

Attending a Chamber Music Houston event is more than just a concert – we want you to enjoy the complete experience! Here are suggestions and tips that will make your event a wonderful evening.

Give yourself plenty of time for driving and parking. Concerts begin at 7:30 pm, and the doors open by 7:15 pm, so aim for a 7:00 pm arrival at the Shepherd School. When mapping your trip to the campus, use the Shepherd School of Music as your destination, rather than Rice University. This will avoid confusion. Also, refer to the Parking map provided below.

If traffic is moving and you arrive early, no problem! Concessions are offered by Salentos Wine Café in the lobby beginning at 7:00 pm. Enjoy a glass of wine and a snack of cheese and fruit, or a delicious cookie! Cash or credit accepted.

Dining options abound in the Rice University area, so consider a local restaurant for an enjoyable meal before the concert. Rice Village has many cuisine options and price ranges to choose from, and is a short, five-minute drive from the concert hall. The Museum District to the south and Upper Kirby to the north have even more places to dine – not to mention the many restaurants in between, and just a 10-minute drive from your concert.

Here are some frequently asked questions:

How do I purchase tickets?

  • Tickets may be purchased online, by phoning 713-348-5400 or at the box office in the foyer beginning at 6 pm that evening (credit cards, checks and cash).

What do I do if I purchased tickets and I can’t attend the concert?

  • You can donate your tickets by calling 713-348-5400 before 3:00 PM on the day of the concert. An acknowledgment of your gift will be emailed to you. Subscribers may exchange tickets for another concert at no additional charge, depending on seat availability by calling our office.

What is the dress code?

  • Business casual is the most common attire seen with our patrons, but don’t be surprised when you see a student attending in jeans.

May I take pictures during the concert?

  • The noises and light emitted by cell phones, tablets and other such devices are very distracting. Please turn off any and all of these devices before entering the concert hall. If you would like a photo with the performer, meet them in the lobby after the concert.

Here are your parking options:

Self park for $5 at the gate (credit or debit card only) and a five-minute walk, or Valet park for $15 (cash or card). A map is provided below that illustrates the campus entrance you will need you for the option you choose.

During the Concert

What to expect:

  • If this is a new experience for you, welcome! The ushers will provide a Concert Program when you enter the hall and they take your ticket. They will also help you find your seat.
  • Our chamber music concerts usually consist of three music compositions. Most classical pieces consist of several movements. Refer to your Program and enjoy the interesting program notes written about each piece. When the performers pause between movements, refrain from applause (even though you really want to express your enthusiasm). Applause is given after all of the movements have been performed. This allows the performers to stay focused and even re-tune their instruments, if necessary.
  • There will a 15-minute intermission to stretch your legs and enjoy a glass of wine and snacks in the lobby. If available, recordings by the performers are offered for purchase ($20 – $30 each, cash or check only).
  • The concert will last approximately two hours, with a 15-minute intermission included.
  • If you would like to meet the performers, stay in the lobby after the concert. As soon as possible, they will come out to the lobby to answer your questions, sign an autograph, and even take a selfie with you!
